Have you won at the MLM game? Don't feel bad if you haven't succeeded at MLM (Network Marketing), most people will not win the MLM game!

I know, I am one of them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who criticize MLM, of call it a scam. Network Marketing can be a viable and very effective business model.

It has made millionaires of a few excellent recruiters, and there are thousands of people who make a full time living doing network marketing.

I was introduced to MLM back in 1995. My wife was looking for a job and went for an "interview". Little did she know it was an "interview" to recruit people into a network marketing business.

When she told me about the "interview" and the income potential, I guessed it was one of those Amway type of things and wanted nothing to do with it.

Well, she was really interested in looking further into it, so as a good husband who wanted to please my wife, I went with her to talk to the couple who were pushing a vitamin product.

We really had a lot in common with the MLM couple, and even though I was skeptical, we gave it a try. We really got into it and took it very seriously.

We traveled from Colorado to Indianapolis for training, and it was some very motivational training. We also met a lot if great people and had a great time.

We also got caught up in the "special conference" deal and spent about $2000 on a bug vitamin pack. But, we were believers now!

My wife started "interviewing" others, and getting them to join us for presentations. We started doing weekly hotel presentations. I was the main presenter, and being somewhat of an introvert, it was a challenge for me. But we signed up a few people and were having a blast.

We traveled to Las Vegas for the company convention and again met some great people and had a great time. We weren't making any money to speak of, but we believed we would and we were having so much fun. Of course, we had little responsibility then - no kids, no house, few bills, so it was all good.

We continued to work the business, but stared hearing less and less from the company and our team leaders. We finally learned that the company was struggling.

The company eventually closed it's doors, which is a shame, because of all the MLM products I have seen, they had the most unique and I believe best vitamin supplement product.

Well, we were crushed. My wife stated that she would never work an MLM business again. I on the other hand, had an entrepreneurial spirit waken with me.

Then, I found the internet. This was before every network marketing opportunity was on the internet, with their business building bells and whistles systems.

I found this cool website, that took stepped you through an MLM business opportunity, product, and company - it was cool. I don't remember the name of the system, but it was built by a team leader who was building a Life Force International business.

A side note - The last I heard LFI was no longer allowing their distributors to use the internet to build their LFI business - how ironic.

The early days of building an MLM business on the internet were great. I didn't make a great deal of money, never a full time income, but made enough to stay interested.

No more live business presentations, you didn't have to call people - it was great. Anyone with an internet connection could work an MLM business from anywhere.

Then other network marketers caught on and there were hundreds of different downline building and business building systems. It seemed I'd run into a new system every week, and so would my downline members.

Every week the newest, greatest "wiz bang" system was released, and you had the opportunity to use this system first and be at the top of what was going to be a huge organization. And, you didn't have to do anything because the system and your upline was going to do all the work for you.

So, with the internet the number of people working an MLM business went up, but retention dropped drastically as people jumped from opportunity to opportunity. There was no company or product loyalty with distributors, just the dream of making it big with not having to do any work.

It was so easy to join a new opportunity and the cost to get started was so low, that people never felt like they had made an investment in the program, which made it very easy to drop out.

I have to admit, I got caught in the trap of chasing the next "big" thing and spent too much time jumping around. I'm as guilty as anyone!

Company distributors would not stay with one company long enough to have success, before jumping to another company.

Network marketing companies were jumping up all over the internet, just to be out of business months later. You really had to be careful about what company you joined if you were looking for a long term home.

I know of so many people that busted their tail to build a great downline, only to see the company go "belly up". All that hard work down the drain.

People who joined MLM companies dropped out after not making any money, and started calling them scams ,because they never made any money. The truth is most of those people never did anything. Some were mislead, or lied to, and didn't think they had to do anything to make money.

But a large number of complainers were given training and direction - they simply didn't do anything. Then they would drop out of one company and go join another company just to do nothing, and repeat the cycle.

All of this lead to a negative perception of the MLM industry, especially those being worked online. It was at this point that I decided I had enough with MLM.

There was too much competition for very similar products and pay plans. The pay per rep was just too low to be able to stay motivated long enough to get a strong group going, most downline members would never do anything anyway - it was just no longer worth it. I told myself I would never work MLM again.

It was then that I realized that instead of working my tail off on MLMs, my focus should be on learning how to market on the internet.

If I could learn how to market on the internet, I could market anything I wanted - affiliate programs, MLMs or anything else. The key was learning how to market on the internet.

Once you understand how to market on the internet, you will own the keys to success in any online venture.
